Fireman Cadet Widow Days #1

Well, so I haven't written in here for a bit. I expect that I might write a bit more now since Einar has now started the Fire Academy at SAC (Monday through Friday 6pm-10pm and Saturday 8am-5pm). Since he decided that he wanted to become a fireman, Einar has begun collecting "gear". Because I am from a medical family, I know that you need certain uniforms and a couple of tools that are your own, but it has been just hilarious to see what he brings home because he "needs" it. Everything from hand-me-down bunker gear(that's the outer coat, pants, hood and gloves(although he promptly got his own gloves)) to T-shirts bearing the name of our volunteer fire department-- all stations have their own T-shirt, to uniform button-downs to cargo pants, flashlights, hats, a radio, a sweater and Under Armor shirts, pants, shorts, beenie, and gloves. It has been quite rediculous the amount of clothing and materials you need to become a firefighter! It would figure though that Einar would have two careers that require a lot of extras.:)
Last night we put together all of his paraphenalia for going to his first class Monday at 6pm. It was like preparing a kindergartener for his first day of school. He bought a new backpack and labeled all of his books and placed them neatly into it. We went to Office Max and bought his special type of pen-- Tul in black so that he'll never be without a pen and have to do the penalty of 100 pushups. Then we went to Sam's and bought pens in bulk. These can be traded like kids trade snacks so that they can make friends. These he put into one of the front pockets of the backpack. All the while I was doing my part by washing and ironing three sets of uniforms. Why three sets? Well, apparently you need to be able to show the teachers "chiefs" that you are committed enough that you have many uniforms already. Which begged the thought by my, "why don't we just invite them over?". We have fireman pretty much everything. In fact, as we walked through Target last night(where we got the fireman backpack), I was teasing him about needing fireman toothpaste and fireman toothbrushes and fireman deodorant, etc.
It really is very cute. Every little boy's dream job, right? He gets to wear the shiny hat and boots and drive the big truck and make lots of noise as he cuts through traffic. Hopefully it turns out to be all he envisions it to be because then he'll have a bunch of fun going to work and I won't have to anymore!:)
As for my activities tonight as my first night as a fireman cadet's widow, I had tea and muffins with Mom after school, went to work where my student did not show up so, I went home, showered, listened to a sermon on podcast, ate dinner and am doing a little playing on the computer before I'll go to bed. A good evening so far. We'll see how I do with this whole thing.

  1. Congratulations for surviving the first night, both of you!! It sounds like he was so cute; did you take pictures like the parents of kindergarteners? I hope that this is everything he hopes it will be! My widowhood does not begin until next Wednesday although I doubt he'll get much work on that first day. So, I think of it really beginning on the 26th when he goes to school and spends the night at a friends' house.
